This American
Black Vulture was caught in a lumbering
attempt at take off from the road. Vultures
find taking off -- especially after feeding
-- to be very difficult. In some species
it is simply impossible until the meal has
been well digested. Once they are in flight
and have the benefit of thermals they are
one of the most efficient and elegant flyers
of the bird world rarely expending energy
in flapping their wings.
